Ever since I first came into touch with personal development and self-improvement, I was wondering how we could make our lives a little better and more joyful through small steps.
I realized many small habits could make our lives more enjoyable.
Yet, what I also learned is how meaningful human connections and communications are.
I see so many people making the same mistake: They get caught into personal development, optimize many areas of their lives, but they lack to involve their social circle and how they communicate with others.
That’s a pity because we can’t live an entirely happy life without a proper social circle.
Studies even prove how loneliness can lead to health issues and even premature death.
We need like-minded people to live up to our full potential and enjoy our days entirely.
Here are four small steps that helped me to increase not only my happiness but also my overall success in life:

1. Say no more often
I genuinely believe that we could live happier, more successful lives if we’d say no more often.
We agree on projects, people, and occasions that don’t sufficiently excite us way too often. Sometimes, we do it out of courtesy, and sometimes we just lack the confidence to decline.
However, to live a fully satisfied and happy life, we need to reject anything that doesn’t serve us. We all have a minimal amount of time per day, and we should spend it doing things that excite and fulfill us. Of course, we need to get unpleasant things done from time to time, yet, most of the time, we can choose whether we accept an invitation, a new project or a new appointment.
“Half of the troubles of this life can be traced to saying yes too quickly and not saying no soon enough.”
— Josh Billings
2. Surround yourself with uplifting people
This might sound weird, but whenever I meet negative people who drain my energy, I leave.
Your time is precious, and so is your energy. If someone doesn’t benefit you, just leave. Instead, surround yourself with those who are motivating, inspiring, and supporting you.
Of course, we need to support our loved ones through the good and the bad times, but that’s not what I am talking about. We all have bad days, I still have them more often than I’d want to, but I give my best to stay positive and raise my vibration.
My time is limited. Why would I spend it with negativity and drama?
“You can’t control people but you can control who you surround yourself with. Choose to surround yourself with people who believe in you and great things will happen.”
— Robert Tew
3. Support others
A year ago, I didn’t even think about this one, but now it’s a crucial part of my life.
“He who serves the most, reaps the most.”– Jim Rohn
Honestly, supporting other people on their path to success is fun.
We always need a community of great people around us to achieve incredible things, so why not be supportive in all matters?
This can be so easy. Even offering help to an old lady in the supermarket or holding the door for a mother with a buggy can be great acts.
If you look around in public places, you will mainly see grumpy faces and angry people. Don’t be one of them.
Instead, spread joy, love, and support. In the end, all of the kindness will find its way back to you.
Help others achieve their dreams and you will achieve yours.
— Les Brown
4. Get mentored
Having a mentor truly changed my life. I’ve read about the power of mentoring in many books, but I didn’t fully understand it until I experienced it myself.
Currently, I have two beautiful mentors who support me in every aspect of my life. I admire their achievements in business, but their personality.
“Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.”
— John Crosby
Whenever I feel stuck, I can call their number and get some advice. Getting help from a friend is also lovely, but a mentor can help you to find the best in yourself.
Both of my mentors are way older than me and have experience in various fields. They offer advice, connections, and resources whenever I call them.
